Reborn Mac mini set to take over the living room
[sjarvis.com] Think Secret has a story today (Road to Expo: Reborn Mac mini set to take over the living room) about rumors of Apple launching a set-top Mac mini at Apple Expo next month. I’ve been waiting to upgrade my ailing 1st generation TiVo and ailing DVD player, and now it looks like maybe Apple will finally release the thing I’ve been waiting on.

If this happens
[ Jason Preston] Whatever else you say about Apple, they’ve done modern entertainment about x-billion times better than Microsoft, and if I can get a box that does DVR + iTunes (which is increasingly becoming my PC-media central), I am so insanely all about it. Especially if it’s priced to compete with the Xbox 360, which is MS’s real move into that arena.

TiVo Announces Ad Search Capability
[Much Ado About Marketing] The technology is aimed at giving advertisers a more targeted and interested pool of potential buyers while attempting to steer users away from skipping all ads that flicker across their television tube."This is an interesting turn, especially given the announcement a couple of weeks ago by the major networks concerning the penetration of DVR's like TiVo and the resulting increase in audience viewership. The ploy from the networks was clearly an attempt to justify higher ratings (Nielson also announced they would start counting TiVo and other recording devices in their ratings numbers) and, subsequently, higher rates.

á la carte programming ” who pays for what?
[Mediacentric] The FCC yesterday came out endorsing “á la carte” programming from cable and satellite providers ” as a way to give parents more control over the type of programming coming into their house. The full statement of the FCC Chairman before the Senate yesterday is here (Acrobat document), but one section that caught my eye was this: Last year, former Chairman Powell and previous staffer Ken Ferree submitted a report to Congress concluding that a la carte and tiered pricing models (such as a family tier) were not economically feasible and were not in consumers interest.

Reasons Not to get Sky+
[Tom on Identity] My only other option to make use of DVR facilities is to purchase a third party DVR, however this gives me exactly the same recording facilities as my existing VHS recorder (i.e. I have to leave the satellite receiver on the channel I am recording), which defeats the purpose of a satellite service DVR in the first place (no recording one channel while watching another, no integration with the EPG and so on).
