DirecTV Update Sparks TiVo Tizzy

[ PVR Spot: PVR news, DIY PVR, reviews, tivo, replay tv and more] From Wired: A recent software upgrade to DirecTV receivers has infuriated TiVo users who say the change disabled their beloved digital video recorders...

Some slightly related from Technorati and Google.

[Blog-A-Rama] DirecTV already messing with TiVo: software upgrade to DirecTV receivers has infuriated TiVo users who say the change disabled their beloved... I recently became aware that DirecTV is ending their partnership with TiVo and going the DVR route... 2/3 of all TiVo subscribers are really DirecTV subscribers. As you’ll see from the article, DirecTV

[Engadget.com] DirecTV disables TiVo: accident or foul play? - Engadget - www ...: Ok, we know the two camps have had a spate of drama lately, and we’re a little hesitant to actually follow through with any foul play theories, but apparently DirecTV’s latest firmware update to their D10 satellite receivers disables standalone TiVos from communicating to the device via the serial link. In other words, they’re distributing a mandatory device update that makes that TiVo totally useless for making new recordings (no, it isn’t the case for DirecTiVos).

[Singletrack.org] blog^2: DirecTivo: I picked the three-satellite dish over the regular one-satellite dish because it supports all of the local stations in every market (in case I ever move), plus HDTV broadcasts for when I upgrade the TV (note that the Tivo doesn't record HDTV, and the first units that do won't come out until later this year, but then they'll only be able to pack in about 8 hours!)Another reason I like the dish is that it has four outputs, of which the Tivo takes two.

[Advancedmediacommittee.typepad.com] Emmy Advanced Media - Television Business News: Wired Magazine Reports: A recent software upgrade to DirecTV receivers has infuriated TiVo users who say the change disabled their beloved digital video recorders -- and has sparked conspiratorial theories that DirecTV disabled them on purpose.

[Homeentertainment.engadget.com] DirecTV disables TiVo: accident or foul play? - Home Entertainment ...: Ok, we know the two camps have had a spate of drama lately, and we’re a little hesitant to actually follow through with any foul play theories, but apparently DirecTV’s latest firmware update to their D10 satellite receivers disables standalone TiVos from communicating to the device via the serial link. [Pvrblog.com] XP Media Center ver. 3.0 | PVRblog: The potential for MCE is huge though with cable and satellite HDTV being their largest hurdles to overcome before getting mass living room adoption. HDTV may be a small market today but it is the future of the living room PC (TiVo or MCE).
