TiVo and DirecTV make nice -- sort of

[Engadget] A new agreement between TiVo and DirecTV has the two companies on quasi-friendly terms, with TiVo promising three more years of service to DirecTV TiVos, and both companies promising not to mess each other over with patent rights. This comes on the tail of TiVo's suite against Echostar for patent infringement, so we can't help but thinking DirecTV decided to keep their TiVo enabled customers hooked up to monthly TiVo service, which was set to expire in about a year, in exchange for a bit of patent-related grace when it comes to their own DVRs.

DirecTV to launch own DVR

[Digital Tech Life] Hmmm….this isn't good news for TiVo.  The NYTimes is reporting that DirecTV will be launching their own DVR just in time for the holidays, even though the company still has an agreement with TiVo that doesn't run out until 2007.  The terms of their agreement with TiVo has the satellite provider paying TiVO a monthly fee of $1.13 per TiVo subscriber.  Common sense says that they'll want to put all their time and effort into pushing their own soon-to-be-released DVR.  You can see some of their ads running on network and cable television, in newspapers, magazines, and on the radio.  Their ad campaign will cost the company a reported $30 million.

The Long Tail

http://mediacentric.nonliteral.com [ Mediacentric] (One idea now under consideration at DirecTV is to provide these DVRs with an enormous 160-gigabyte recording capacity. The subscriber would only be told about 80 gigabytes, with the remaining 80 gigabytes reserved for encrypted movies.) Once the movies are placed on the DVRs, a customer “rents”
