Archos 705 "Mobile DVR" With WiFi Unveiled, Thanks FCC!

[The Smorgasbord | Geek out with articles on all your favorite tech areas!] Archos wasn't joshing around with this whole WiFi bit, and while that 604 WiFi of theirs might've gotten dinged a bit in the reviews, it seems that they're back for more with this new 704 WiFi that the FCC so kindly has revealed to us.

Upcoming Archos 704 WiFi to have DVB-T?

[pocketables.net] between those odd-looking speakers, which suggests that Archos is either paying homage to its previous PMPs and bundling the DVR cable/dock with the device or including some kind of on-the-go TV tuner and recording system that relies on WiFi. I'm inclined to favor the latter, as the company's old AV420 already carries the PVR (pocket video recorder) moniker and the 704 is listed on the DVB-T product list.

I think I hurt my DVRs feelings

Many reasons, Martin says, but it is the so-easy-a-caveman-can-understand-it arithmetic that dooms the pioneering DVR maker: Cable and satellite providers: BIG.

Success!

[(Fish)] I had to upgrade in this case because 24 is coming back this week and it will be on opposite Heroes when it returns from break and none of my other DVRs (I've got four, all networked together) had the space to keep an extra 24 hours plus the other stuff that's on them.

[Lifehacker, the Productivity and Software Guide] It's ironic that LH chooses now to feature MP: I just got my HTPC up and running under MP 0.2.0.4 and it's working beautifully. Short of a hardware defect on my Hauppage PVR-500, the signal looks better than my TWC set-top-box (anyone else hate TWC's new and "improved" Navigator?).

The VCR Media Center PC

[My Gadget Info] He frankensteined together a “ViVo”, which is a Vista Media Center PC on a Celeron D 3.0 with a 250GB hard drive all running inside, you guessed it, a Panasonic VCR. The only thing visibly different from the outside is the addition of a fan, and the fact that the VCR slot is actually a disc slot to pop out the DVD drive!

HDNet now available on ExpressVu Channel 814

[apeman.org] I’ve been waiting for channel 814 to show up, and it finally came into existance yesterday, and it looks like it is going to stay. In late October HDNet did make an appearance in the ExpressVu lineup, but it was either a mistake, or it was removed due to technical difficulties.
