PVRLib > Living Room PC - still a long way off
[seattleduck | kevin briody] Paul Boutin in Slate claims that the reality of the much-hyped living room PC is still a long way off. Thomas Hawk claims otherwise, and goes into some detail on how the combination of XBOX 360’s and new TV tuner card-equipped Vista PC’s will finally deliver on the vision.

Inside the Mind of a Nerd: An O'Reilly blog has a look at the new features in Leopard, and they actually look better in this format then when you look at how they were presented, but it's still not a huge upgrade, in my opinion. Engadget compiled a bunch of shots of the Mac Pro if you're interested, but it doesn't physically look much better than a PowerMac to me. On the right side here is Sony's new portable media player called "Mylo," and its form factor may look similar to the PSP but it's actually much cooler. (via Cosmos)
AV Report | Premeir source of audio and video news, reviews, and opinions: My take is that HTPC is too cumbersome to get used to and can pose much difficult problems given that it runs a full blown operating system that requires constant maintenance. The only way I see a computer entering the living room is when someone comes up with a stripped highly customized version of an OS, be it Linux, OS X, or Windows that has a very usable and front end along with close to 0 boot time. Massive: I certainly buy the idea that people are quite happy with separate devices for their "lean-back" and "learn-forward" activities. What I'm not so sure of is how much sense it makes to distinguish between the back-end systems that power these. (via Cosmos)
Xbox 360 Underground: He says that most homes are consolidating around a two-hub model. The home office utilizes a PC (or Mac) with multimedia features, while a TiVo or other DVR owns the living room. (via Cosmos)
On Computers Tips: I found them a really decent way to extend the useful life of an old PC and even a Pentium II at 233 MHz with only 64 megabytes of memory is capable of routing all the traffic in a fairly large office without breaking a sweat. I had one with exactly those specifications working in an office with 24 PCs and it ran like a champ for 3 years, until the hardware gave up. (via Cosmos)
Thomas Hawk's Digital Connection: Since you will now already have a super powerful new Vista PC with Media Center built in and since you already have an XBox 360 -- you *do* already have an XBox 360 right? The marketing message will be something to the effect of "would you like to add an HDTV PVR to your current XBox360?" By checking this option you will essentially be adding an HDTV CableCARD tuner to your new PC purchase which will then wirelessly or wired (if your home is wired for a network and a lot of them are) transmit your HDTV to your XBox in your living room. Xbox 360 Underground: So people don't want a PC connected to their TV. Maybe a Windows Vista PC in the home office with an Xbox 360 Media Extender in the living room can offer a better model? (via Cosmos)
Michael Gartenberg: Thomas Hawk has some good insight about how Vista could make the living room PC a reality. Not sure I totally agree and not sure Redmond is thinking along these lines but it's well worth the read. (via Cosmos)

Also, our user experience is vastly superior to that of any of the set top box PVRs.
