PVRLib > TiVo and DirecTV make nice -- sort of

[Engadget] A new agreement between TiVo and DirecTV has the two companies on quasi-friendly terms, with TiVo promising three more years of service to DirecTV TiVos, and both companies promising not to mess each other over with patent rights. This comes on the tail of TiVo's suite against Echostar for patent infringement, so we can't help but thinking DirecTV decided to keep their TiVo enabled customers hooked up to monthly TiVo service, which was set to expire in about a year, in exchange for a bit of patent-related grace when it comes to their own DVRs.

Nyquist Capital: While DIRECTV would have the right to continue to service existing DIRECTV receivers with TiVo service without payment to us, it would not have the right to add new DIRECTV customers with TiVo service. And while TiVo would no longer be able to generate additional revenue from the then-current DIRECTV customers with TiVo service, we would have no further obligation to provide upgrades, fixes, new features, or software support. Engadget: Sony also throws in a dual-layer burner, 200GB drive and FeliCa port (these are Japan-only models, remember). The keyboard is designed to fold up on top of the display, leaving just enough displayed to allow access to audio controls via the included remote. (via Cosmos)

Nyquist Capital: I still see a lot of risk for a company like TiVo and with Hollywood increasingly adopting the VOD business model, this will be a huge issue for the company going forward, but with the extension of their agreement with DTV, it removes one more objection by the TiVo bears who like to say that TiVo is on a death watch, despite having limited debt, substantial assets, high margin recurrable revenue and being positioned in one of the hottest growth industries in the market right now. TiVo may not end up capturing 100% of the PVR market, but Apple only picked up 5% of the PC market and they’ve done just fine. (via Cosmos)

TIVO has gotten smart - they are a service provider and people who want the best PVR service know they can turn to TIVO for the most functionality, and won’t have to rely on getting a lame cable company box with a less than desirable PVR.

A self-described geek poked around in the TiVo install directory and found a utility program called SoundConvert that had references to the LAME mp3 encoder libraries within the binary.
